Breaking Barriers

Overcoming self-consciousness in dance

Dancing—whether at the studio, at a wedding, or by yourself at home—can be one of the most freeing and self-expressing activities out there. But for so many, the idea of dancing in front of other people makes them feel self-conscious. Fear of being judged, the need to be perfect, or fear of not being confident usually operate as unseen shackles that keep us stuck. The good news? These barriers are surmountable. Here are 10 easy tips for overcoming self-consciousness in dance and attaining confidence and joy of movement.

1. Start Small and in Private

If dancing on a crowded dance floor is enough to give you the jitters, begin where you feel most at ease: in your own domain. Play your favorite beats and let your body move any way it wants. No judgment, no mirrors – just music and you. This allows you to discover your own style and connect with movement in a comfortable, pressure-free environment.

2. Shift Your Focus from Perfection to Enjoyment

Dance is sensation, not flawless technique. Perfectionism is a creativity killer, especially in dance. Instead of being mired in technique or what the heckers would criticize, focus on the rhythm and how music makes you feel. Dancing is such a blast when you are aware to the moment.

3. Take Beginner-Friendly Classes

Taking a beginner-level dance class is a great confidence booster. You’ll be surrounded by others who are also just learning, so you have nothing to worry about in terms of being judged. And having someone guide you through movements can give you a sense of control and settle your nerves.

4. Practice Self-Compassion

Keep in mind that we all feel self-conscious at some point—yes, even pro dancers. Embrace the idea that there is no avoiding error in the process. Be kind to yourself, and assert the courage that it takes to get out there and try. Confidence starts with what you tell yourself.

5. Select a Style That Speaks to You

From hip-hop and salsa to ballet and contemporary, there is something for every kind. Experiment with each style and genre to find a style that suits you and your body type. When you select a style where you are more comfortable with yourself, it will make doing it feel and look that way as well.

6. Dress in What Makes You Feel Comfortable

What you wear can really make you feel more confident about yourself. Dress in something that provides you with ease of movement and makes you feel good about yourself. Whether it is a figure-hugging outfit or comfortable sweats, the right attire can make you step into your moves with confidence.

7. Learn to Laugh at Yourself

Dancing is just as much about having fun as it is about moving. If you trip over your own feet or miss a beat, laugh and keep going. Dancing with laughter and playfulness allows the room for erasing self-consciousness and makes happiness stand in the forefront.

8. Visualize Confidence

Visualization is a powerful tool. Shut your eyes before dancing and visualize yourself moving exquisitely and with confidence. Visualize smiling, feeling the rhythm, and enjoying every step. Over time, this imaginary practice could shift your mindset and develop real confidence in movement.

9. Dance With Supportive Friends

Other people’s energy can be really energizing. Hang out with dance-loving friends or family members who make you feel good about yourself. Their encouragement can create an optimistic feedback loop, leading you to feel more comfortable and open to enjoying the moment.

10. Remember the Why

Why do you wish to dance? Is it for the pure joy of movement? To be attuned to music? To connect? When self-consciousness arises, remember your “why.” Identifying with the reason for dance serves to shift attention away from external worries and toward the internal joy of moving your body.
